Una vida performativa
A performative life
This video was conceptualised to illustrate that identity is invented and life is inherently performative. I decided to drive the message home through a language I don’t speak.
At it’s core the video was about cultivating a growth-mindset.
Eventually I produced two more videos and this project evolved into an on-going series.
The process
I started by writing the script, the main message had been on my mind for a while like an itch I couldn’t scratch. I felt the best way to put this message across was as a video in a language I don’t speak. Once the script was ready, I decided I would film it in Spanish. I reached out to a friend who is a native speaker to help me ensure the google translated version of the script was accurate and my pronunciation was authentic (or at least close). Once I felt I was ready, I asked my mom to be my cinematographer. Then I edited and colour corrected the project. The last step was adding subtitles and the project was done.
The original script
I don't speak Spanish, but in the next few minutes I’ll try to. Why?
Because I have some thoughts that I would like to share with you, and this
is the medium that I chose to illustrate them.
Life is performative. Identity is invented.
Who I am depends on where I live
and who I talk to.
This means that if we try hard enough, we can literally become
whoever we want.
You have the ability to modify everything about you,
from the type of hair you have to the languages you speak.
This idea is very powerful. You can wake up one day and decide to move
to a different part of the world and completely rebuild your identity.
So don't just sit back and let things happen.
Be rigorous in inventing your identity. And make sure you’re happy with
who you choose to be.
That's all.
Thanks for watching.
